Privacy Policy

Last updated

This Privacy Policy explains how Think Discount, LLC (“we,” “us,” or “our”) handles information in connection with Retirement Calculator at retirement-calculator.ai (the “Site”). By using the Site, you agree to the practices described here.

The short version

The retirement calculator runs entirely in your browser. The numbers you type — your age, salary, savings balance, contribution amounts, and retirement goals — are never transmitted to our servers and are never stored by us. We do not ask you to create an account, and we do not sell personal information. The only personal information we collect directly is an email address, and only if you choose to give us one.

Information we do not collect

  • Your calculator inputs. All projections are computed locally in your browser using JavaScript. The values you enter are not sent to us, logged, or retained after you close the page.
  • Account or financial credentials. The Site has no login, and we never ask for Social Security numbers, bank or brokerage credentials, account numbers, or payment details.

Information you choose to give us

The Site offers an optional sign-up form to be notified when our mobile app launches. If you submit it, we collect the email address you enter and pass it to our email service provider. We use that address only to send you the notification you asked for and occasional related updates about Retirement Calculator. We do not sell it, and we do not share it with advertisers. You can unsubscribe or ask us to delete your address at any time using the contact details below.

Information stored on your device

If you save a scenario to compare projections, we store it in your browser’s localStorage under the key retirement-calculator:scenarios. This includes the calculator inputs and the name you give the scenario. It stays on your device, is never transmitted to us, and is removed when you delete the scenario in the app or clear your browser’s site data.

Information collected automatically

Like most websites, the Site and its service providers automatically receive certain technical information when you visit, which may include:

  • IP address and approximate location derived from it (typically city or region)
  • Browser type, operating system, device type, and screen size
  • Pages viewed, time spent on the Site, and the referring page or search engine
  • Cookies and similar identifiers, as described below

How we use information

We use the limited information described above to:

  • Operate, maintain, and secure the Site
  • Send the mobile-app launch notification to anyone who signed up for it
  • Understand which pages and tools are useful so we can improve them
  • Display advertising that keeps the Site free to use
  • Detect and prevent abuse, fraud, and technical problems
  • Comply with legal obligations

Cookies and similar technologies

Cookies are small text files stored on your device. The Site uses cookies for analytics and advertising as described below. You can block or delete cookies through your browser settings; the calculator will continue to work, though some preferences may not be remembered.

Advertising

We use third-party advertising companies, including Google, to serve ads on the Site.

  • Google, as a third-party vendor, uses cookies to serve ads on the Site. Google’s use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to you based on your visit to this Site and/or other sites on the internet.
  • You may opt out of personalized advertising by visiting Google Ads Settings. You can also opt out of a third-party vendor’s use of cookies for personalized advertising by visiting aboutads.info or the NAI opt-out page.
  • Third-party vendors and ad networks other than Google may also serve ads on the Site and may use their own cookies. We do not control those cookies.
  • More information about how Google uses data from sites that use its services is available at policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites.

Analytics

We use Google Analytics to understand aggregate traffic patterns — for example, how many people read a given article. Google Analytics sets cookies and processes IP addresses on our behalf. You can prevent Google Analytics from collecting your data by installing the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on.

Hosting and service providers

The Site is served through Amazon Web Services (Amazon S3 and Amazon CloudFront). AWS may process request logs, including IP addresses, in the course of delivering the Site. Email addresses submitted to the mobile-app notification list are handled by our email service provider. We share information only with service providers of this kind, and only as needed to operate the Site. We may also disclose information where required by law or legal process, or in connection with a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets, in which case the acquiring party will be bound by this policy. We do not sell or rent personal information.

Data retention

We do not maintain a database of visitors. Email addresses on the notification list are retained until you unsubscribe, until you ask us to delete them, or until the list is retired. Aggregate analytics data is retained by Google Analytics under its own retention settings, and infrastructure logs are retained by our hosting providers for a limited period under their standard practices. Scenarios saved in your browser are retained until you delete them.

Your rights under the GDPR (EEA, UK, and Switzerland)

If you are located in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, or Switzerland, you have the right to request access to, correction of, or deletion of your personal data; to object to or restrict processing; and to data portability. You may also lodge a complaint with your local supervisory authority.

Where we process personal data, we rely on the following legal bases: our legitimate interest in operating, securing, and improving the Site; and your consent for advertising and analytics cookies where consent is required. Where consent is the basis, you may withdraw it at any time by clearing cookies and using the opt-out links above.

Apart from any email address you have voluntarily submitted, we do not collect names or account details, so we usually cannot identify an individual visitor from the data we hold. To exercise a right, contact us at the address below with enough detail for us to respond — for example, the email address you signed up with.

Your rights under the CCPA/CPRA (California)

California residents have the right to know what personal information is collected, to request deletion, to correct inaccurate information, and to opt out of the sale or sharing of personal information. We do not sell your personal information and do not knowingly share it for cross-context behavioral advertising beyond the third-party advertising cookies described above, which you can opt out of using the links in the Advertising section. We will not discriminate against you for exercising any of these rights.

Children’s privacy

The Site is intended for adults and is not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us and we will delete it.

International transfers

We operate in the United States. If you access the Site from outside the United States, the limited information described above may be processed in the United States, where data protection laws may differ from those in your country.

Security

The Site is served over HTTPS. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, but because we do not collect or store your financial inputs, the risk to you from using the Site is minimal.

Links to other sites

The Site links to third-party resources such as the IRS and the Social Security Administration. We are not responsible for the privacy practices of those sites and encourage you to read their policies.

Changes to this policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. The “Last updated” date at the top of this page reflects the most recent revision. Material changes will be noted on this page.
